Antioxidants in Tea And Their Benefits

One of the most popularly consumed beverages in the world, tea is not just the most-loved drink, but also considered as one of the healthiest! With much lower caffeine content than coffee, it is a signature health drink in the 21st century. A lot of it is because of the presence of significant antioxidant levels, that have sealed tea’s reputation for health. In order to understand antioxidants, one must first know what are free radicals. 


What are free radicals?

Free radicals are formed when weak chemical bonds get separated. In their molecular form, free radicals are unstable and render other cells unstable as well. This has a damaging effect on the body and take a toll on your immune system as they have a key role to play. 
While the body can only respond to normal levels of free radicals, it needs the support of antioxidants when they are present in excessive amount. Teas are a rich source of antioxidants and aid in reducing free radicals in the body. 

How do antioxidants combat free radicals?

Antioxidants prevent oxidation. Fruits and vegetables are common sources of antioxidants. But, tea is known to have more antioxidants than fruits and vegetables. These benefits include blood clot formation, weight loss, and lot more. 

Antioxidants in Tea

All teas are derived from the same plant named Camellia sinensis. It is just the difference in their processing that leads to the formation of various tea types ranging from black tea to oolong tea,green tea and the least processedwhite tea . The antioxidants present in tea are called flavanoids and these prevent our bodies from cell damage. They further have catechins which is a natural antioxidant and aids in weight-loss and other health benefits.
